After a count of our many collective aching bits there was a unanimous agreement to call a "lay day
After a reasonable sleep in and and a pretty good full english breakfast with some excellent Eastern European service, it was officially a do what the hell you want to day !
Harro & Viv decided to get Lintons bike into a nearby bike shop to look at an annoying sound (no not Henley) coming from his lower crank / gearing area before taking time out to go baguette searching and just general relaxing.
Noel also headed to the bike shop for some new tyres (why he couldn't use his square ones is beyond me !) and a new mud guard while "Bear Grylls Coxhill" suffering adventure withdrawal symptoms set off on a mission to explore the town.
Noels old tyres donated to museum ! |
For Kev and I it was off to the Jersey War tunnels after we first putting in our washing at the hotel.
The tunnels provided a great history lesson of life on Jeresy under German occupation. Surprisingly there was a level of tolerance between locals and occupiers.
Despite this there were still over a 1, 000 people sent to internment camps on the European mainland and life for the 5, 000 slave labourers on Jersey was nothing short of just existing !
Entrance to the Tunnels ! |
The fact that we learnt all of this is nothing short of a miracle ! We'd pre-booked our bus to the tunnels then forgot it was booked for 10.00a.m.
When Kev asked me what time we were going I said 10.30 but then noticed looking out our window (10.01) on the 3rd floor that our bus was lined up and ready to depart !
Sending Kev off I quickly put on my shoes and raced after him trying not to bowl over the numerous slow moving oldies in my way.
Flying out the Hotels door I saw Kev had chased the bus from the hotels car park out on to road finally cornering the driver allowing me to catch up and get on the bus as well. The fact that the bus was packed and the driver a budding comedian meant that we had to suffer numerous merciless jokes about Australians on our way - I suppose a small price to pay !
On the way back we tried out the "Worlds Best Pastie" shop in town, tackled a few bulls then took on board a larger than life Costa cup of Coffee before heading out for dinner !
